Painted by me and sculpted by Mujin Park. Bought as a one-off. Sold to collector.
The hunter collectors of the Himalaya collect ‘mad honey’ 100 meters up in the mountains. Infused with poison, it is sold in Timbuktu and beyond as a medicine and drug. Risking their lives, only one person chosen by their deity may remove the combs.
Touching tale of bravey, fate and making their living in these remote areas. I suggest you see the beautiful National Geographic documentary called ‘Last Honey Hunter’ which can be found on Youtube and Vimeo.
It was scary painting this as a one-off. The model moved me a lot. Painted during Dogma48 in Copenhagen this weekend.

Not surprised that this is the last honey-hunter ) I knew about this way of gathering of wild honey and I don't know how should person be courage or desperate to get it.
And painting is great!
I love this! A great historical miniature showing such a different topic than the usual historical miniature! Lovely scene and paintjob! Happy mistakes ;) ... Keep on happy painting!
Ha ha yes happy mistakes. He took a nose dive in the pallette. He has a lighter honey comb and arms covered in bee stings because of this. Happy accidents.
I love historical sculpts, which are not connected to war, but life itself. The sculpt is wonderful, as well as your painting. I think that the oils add this sculpt a feel of realism as well as the colour pallet creates this mood of hardship and, well, life itself. I love it.
Thanks so much Stepan for this comment. I watched the documentary all day before painting, and the background was actually my second version. The firet was much too colourful and did not catch the darkness I wanted for this last of the honey hunters. The base has some blood and feathers of a sacrifical chicken. The whole thing is about what we can take from nature and what it eventually ends up costing. Thank you.
I think it is one of those models that many people feel it should exist but very few buy. It would not have sold well, I think. Simply because the subject is so specific. It is a beautiful model though, and I feel guilty being the only one to paint it. But thanks Paul!
