My version of sunset 1:12 bust from Pedro Fernandez Works, with twilight cityscape backdrop. The plinth and backdrop were designed specifically to deal with the difficulty of placing a bust against a backdrop - I've tried to ensure that the plinth tapers behind the model and the backdrop to more or less conform with the cut of the bust.
  • Tommy Gunn

Excellent job and the backdrop is tailored to perfection.
    • Josh_Underhill

Thanks Tommy Gunn. I'm glad this is appreciated. It was a challenge to do this with a bust and ensure that the background aligned with the complete parts of the model. A lot of the work is being done by the plinth which was proportioned to hold the bust and the background in the right place.

Very warm and bright summer work! Gold!
    • Josh_Underhill

Thanks Origaium. As soon as I saw this bust released I knew I had to paint it with this kind of ambiance

Thankyou Fabrizio! I'm enjoying your precise 54 mm's as always - especially thre pilots with empanage section on the base
  • Marius "Der Stone "Stein

Amazing colours. I like how you can find the colours in the bust and the backdrop. It fits really well and creates an amazing ambience.
    • Josh_Underhill

Thanks Marius. This is something I noticed researching reference and real sunsets over the past yearwhere there is still some some intensity to the light in the 'golden hour'. Like actual sunsets it's difficult to capture with photography ant the colours in hand are slightly different to what is seen here so I'm glad this has been noticed

p.s. - I'm a big fan of your Estrella with the gold dress - currently working on a version of this now
  • Piotr Pieścik

Very cool idea - I'm not a fan of backdrops generally, but yours is just so well done - I also love that it works with the mini turned backwards! The diffuse stippled texture you've applied to everything also works very well.
    • Josh_Underhill

Thanks Piotr - I'm glad you appreciate this. The diffuse softness was done to try and show low light ambiance of late sunset. I almost fixed the figure backwards which wasn't originally intended but I felt it looked so good and made more sense in having her looking out over the scene. In the end I didn't as it was going to a show and I'd spent so much time working on the fabric textures etc. on the front. Also, the main light in the scene is coming from the opposite side from the off camera setting sun which conflicts with the model - Maybe something to do for a second version set in sunrise.

    Gold!

    Gold! It's very nice!

Amazing piece and paintjob, Josh! The ambience really catches a sunset and the level of detail is so lovely. The textures, the free color play, the imperfections of the blends, the freehand underdress, the glasses. I love this all so much. One of the strongest pieces I have seen this year on Putty & Paint in my humble eyes! Gold and Editor's choice from my side! Keep on happy painting!
    • Josh_Underhill

Thankyou very much Roman for your wonderful comment and Editor's nomination! I'm happy that this strikes a chord and the various details are appreciated. For me this has been one of those rare pieces where the vision I had at the outset was more or less realised which has been very satisfying :)
  • Eamon Connerty

    Stunning work! Just wow! Gold!!!!
    • Josh_Underhill

Thanks Eamon - Glad you like it :)
  • Chris "D.Vader" SuhrePLUS

Wow. You really captured the ambience well. The textures on the overalls is nice. the lacey like top underneath is amazing. Love the sunglasses with the bit of reflection on her hair.
    • Josh_Underhill

Thanks Chris! - I'm glad that the light under the glasses has been noticed
  • Štěpán Tichý

This is beautiful in every sense of the word. I love the atmosphere and warmth. But then my eye wanders around the fire and sees the lace and the bra and it is just spectacularly painted. The interplay of the textures and light is gorgeous. Really powerful piece.
    • Josh_Underhill

Thankyou Stepan for your kind words and appreciation!
  • Archigrog

    Great atmosphere, and intense painting
  • Kyle Maitland

This is an absolutely stellar composition using a bust, you have left it looking very cohesive, finished, and pleasing respecting he cuts, and avoiding the disconnects and suspensions of the mind these usually require. All told, it raises the bar on how this should be approached in a cohesive and pleasing way, as it is not telling us 'dont look behind the curtain'.
    • Josh_Underhill

Thanks Kyle - I'm glad this is fully appreciated. I was very happy with the overall painting and light, but thie overall composition of plinth/background/bust was one of the most critical aspects. In the past I've rejected a few plans involving busts and backdrops for the reasons mentioned above so it was very satisfying to find a solution to this dilemma in this instance.
  • Eugene Dravskikh

Very unusual and impressive! Congratulations on such an interesting paintjob! Only gold
