Originally painted as a personal challenge, the aim of this piece was to replicate the Games Workshop box art for this model, where a Chaplain from the Son's of Horus Space Marine Legion was striding forward partly illuminated by an explosion. Figure has subsequently been bought by a private collector.

Dramatic lighting of models is something I really like to add as I think it can bring a real dynamic, cinematographic quality to what is, in essence, a stationary lump of plastic. However, the multiple thin glazes required to get the desired effect proved a real challenge with the Army Painter paints I was largely using at the time and I seemed to spend a huge amount of time almost fighting the paints to get them to do what I wanted. To finish the model I switch to using Scale75 paints and things went much smoother thereafter. Haven't looked back since.

Lovely, atmospheric work. It is great to see you paint in this dramatic way. I agree, miniatures start to live more in a moment! Keep on happy painting!
