The most exotic and colorful of all the uniforms worn during the American Civil War were those derived from the French “Zouaves” regiments.
Figure depicts a corporal from the 5th New York Regiment, advancing at the Battle of Gaines' Mill in 1862, where they and other Union forces were defeated.
