I sculpted this scene based on the classic painting by Swedish artist John Bauer (1915). The original piece is an illustration of a children's fairy tale. This young brave boy ventures into the forest and meets a large troll. Since the boy is so innocent and brave, he merely greets the troll in a friendly manner - to the amusement of the troll. John is one of the most influential fantasy painters and you can see his style reflected in the works of many of our contemporary artists' works.

I decided to sculpt the backdrop as a test to see if something like the "flats" I see in painting shows could be integrated into a scene with figures.
