Okie
painted
by
Conrad Mynett
I had an idea for doing a piece based on the Oklahoma dust bowl four or five years ago and when I researched the topic I was very taken with this picture of a man squatting on the ground with this battered hat. So when I started this project I replaced the figures head with a Hornet Head and sculpted a matching hat, using the picture for the name plate.
I felt a background was necessary to give placement to the figure, something more than just another patch of dry ground, so I used pictures of the period for insperation and created a three layerd backdrop. I think it's something I will revist on another piece one day, maybe with a slightly larger gap between the layers.

I am an Okie so I love this piece. My grand parents lived during the dust bowl, the stories they tell of hardship make it amazing that they stayed in Oklahoma. My hat goes off to you sir for your fine piece of work.
