Latest project painted for BrokenToad - El Dorado. As soon as I saw the bust I knew I wanted to use it as an exercise to push emotion and the textures. I hope you like it.

I pictured this guy as someone who is weather beaten, old and tired, a veteran that had witnessed atrocities in the name of duty. Perhaps he was having regrets and all those years of war had taken a heavy toll on his soul as well as his body.

Hope you like him!

The paintjob match perfectly with the story you wanna tell ... i can feel sadness, tiredness and pain in those eyes. And all those textures... Strong gold !
    • Jay Martin (Redrum)

Laurent I really appreciate your time, vote and comment, nice words and gives high motivation for next project!
  • Denniz Hedin SaloPLUS

A fantastic paintjob, I really like the tired eyes and weathered look. Maybe your best work so far!
  • Jaroslaw Camelson Drabek

Really good tectures! I love armor! great paintjob mate!
  • Aythami Alonso Torrent

Hi Jay! First I have to say you did a good job! It's a tremendus ejercise of texturing. If it helps, it needs more "clean" looking in all the surface. This seems opposite of giving textures but nothing at all. Yo can give a subtke texture and then clean above with glazes to unify. Dont have to name the best painter on this (kirill kanaev). Cheers and keep on the good work!
    • Jay Martin (Redrum)

hey yeas i agree with you, i did glaze afterwards but maybe should have done more, but was worried to lose the effect i was searching for on this piece. thanks for the feedback its much apprecited!!!
  • David Faust-Du Sablon

  • Andrea

I love the "issued" feeling of this guy!! Bravo Jay!!!
  • Arnau LazaroPLUS

Great texture and expresion work! Maybe a little bit more definition in the face will make that an excelent. Great job Jason!
    • Jay Martin (Redrum)

Thanks for your advice and I agree the face seem a little "loose". On to the next!!!
  • Wouter Schaap

Really digging the the approach you took with the face. Bold colors, textures and lights. The metal armor is also really well done. * p.s. The face of this character really reminds me of a Dutch book writer/politician called Jan Terlouw.
    • Jay Martin (Redrum)

Thanks very much for your words!! It's appreciated! I don't know this author, I will look, thankyou!
  • Albert Moreto FontPLUS

A little too desaturated for my taste but good job on the textures Jason!
    • Jay Martin (Redrum)

Many thanks, yes i lost the saturation, perhaps i should have put it back in the midtones at the very least! On to the next!
  • Sergey PopovichenkoPLUS

Hi Jason! Work is beautiful. A wonderful technique. And the character is very convincing!
  • Anson

Like face textures and leather effect!! Gold!!
  • Roman LappatPLUS

Texture wise this is quite a wonderful result on all surfaces. A great texture study. In my eyes it only misses final definitions. Overall it works really good!
    • Jay Martin (Redrum)

thankyou Roman, this is valuable advice for me and an honour, thanks for your words!
  • Francesco "Franciuus" FarabiPLUS

I love this interpretation Jason, there is a good and interesting brush gesture on it. Success! ;)
  • Jason Zhou

Cool texture work representing various types of materials. Great work
  • Paul Bullock

Jay I love your work, I'd kill for your shroom shaman. The eyes on this piece are wonderful but I feel the rest might be over worked, as a passionate fan I feel this lacks your normal fluidity, almost like you chased the image in your head but the sculpt fell short?
    • Jay Martin (Redrum)

Thx for your words bud although I'm neither sure I understand or agree as I purposefully kept everything minimal, with muted palette and limited colours. Actually I think my biggest issue is the lack of complexity and saturation to some of the colours
  • Roman "Light_one" Gruba

Little bit pale photos i think, but bust looks really good!
  • Herman aka Glitterwolf

    The face is incredible!
  • smallsoldier (Scott Pasishnek)

Textures pushed?... yeah! Emotion? Hell yeah! Gold. Very painterly Jay. It has a very Renaissance like painting style to it.
